Day 1: Learning curve & Swerve - Kevin


Thursday June 4
CRAP! Best way of describing our first day, a long day. We did a shake down ride a week or so prior to this trip and knew things weren't perfect with the truck/trailer combo. We had problems with the handling of the trailer at speeds over 60 mph but thought it was manageable at a lower speed. Well on our shake down ride we had loaded the motorcycles and the generator, but once fully loaded things got worse. Stopped at a Lowes and bought 6 bags of gravel to help distribute the weight better, it was an improvement, but not great. After 8 hours we bought 4 more bags and that was a major improvement. Stayed at Bootheel camp ground in Missouri, the reviews said peaceful and quite. Not sure where that reviewer lives but we are a couple hundred yards from an interstate hwy, maybe the constant sounds of semis through the night was their idea of peaceful white noise. Diamond bound in the morning! Stephanie plans on finding one bigger than the Hope Diamond.

Day 15 - Miles of Adventures

Today started out with an outing on back dirt roads to see the Mexican Hat up close and personal.   We were hoping to be able to ride down to the San Juan River, but the descent was very steep with loose sand.   We did get to the back side of the Mexican Hat though. After that on to the Valley of the Gods!   WONDERFUL RIDE!!!   The road through the valley was as perfect as we could ask for for a dirt/sand road.   There was one time when my back wheel got a little squirrely on me in deep sand.   I was to blame because I was riding in Ray Charles mode (swinging head left and right to catch all the sights) and didn’t pay attention to my immediate surroundings.    It was very deep sand!   But I made it and Kevin following made it through with no problems.   Valley of the Gods is beyond words to describe!   I’m so disappointed that my “go pro” camera was not rolling as we drove through the valley.   I thought I’d turned it...

Day 16: Starry Starry Night - Kevin

Day started off at 5am on a trip back to Cortez to have a bed cover installed on the truck. Got back at noon and goofed off for a while and took a nap, Got up before sunset for a photo shoot in the Valley of the Gods. Amazing Milkyway, shot until around midnight until someone came down the road with a flashlight and cut through the desert scrub to get to faster. We loaded up and left before they reached us. I never saw them but it scared Stephanie pretty good. I had a 9mm on my hip and a 380 in my pocket and Steph had a death grip on her 38 for miles down the road. Aside from the spooky person it was a blast. I did randomly scan the area with my flashlight looking for eyeballs, there is a photograph on the office wall of this campground of a big mountain lion in the Valley of the Gods.

Day 7 - Motorcycle Time!

Kevin got up early and went to town and got the hummingbird feeders.  Before we knew it we had 9 hummers visiting.  And we are able to get just a few feet from them - they have no fear and are very curious.  The cushions on our lawn chairs and bright flowers - they really checked them out. Next we got the bikes out and went riding!  There was a gravel mountain road that went up to a lookout area.  We rode the 8 miles up to it, bikes doing very well, and enjoyed the views.  Dust was horrible, thank goodness for full faced helmets.  We left the lookout and traveled a few more miles up heading to an old abandoned mine.  Unfortunately the road got VERY rough and neither of us wanted to chance it, so we turned around and went back to camp and Nikki.  We changed out of our adventure motorcycle gear and jumped back on the bikes to ride to Lemon Lake.  We saw a Bald Eagle, a Red Tailed Hawk put on a show above us, and I found the biggest paw p...
