Day 11: Silverton Bound- Kevin

Well there is 2 mountain passes between Durango and Silverton in 50 miles. The air ride system seems to work pretty well, maybe too well. We cruised through the mountains maintaining and even exceeding the speed limit at times. On our final decent into Silverton off of Molas Gap as we approach Silverton I could smell the ever familiar stench of burning brakes. The stench was from our truck. After stopping at our new campsite I looked at the front wheels and watched the glue on tire weights falling off from the heat. YIKES! Not good. Set up the trailer and went for a ride. The truck needed to cool off. Rode up a valley following a beautiful stream until the  road got really rough. Turned back and got the truck and Nikki and headed back up the valley (sorry truck LOL). Made it all the to the road ended at an abandoned mine and a series of tiered lakes made by beavers, They are amazing engineers! Saw some small wild life, a yellowed belly marmot and PIKAS!! Pikas live in little colonies among the rocks. Great Day!

Day 9 - Moving Day

We moved to the new site and it is so much nicer than the previous site we had.  We now have electricity hookup and lots of room to move around.  Nikki seems to like it also since there is no tall grass here - just trees and pine needles. Kevin spent his day working on the rear end of the truck, with my assistance when needed.  He got the air suspension system on, in a few days we will see how it works.  If it doesn't work, we may be going to a dealership to look for a heavier duty truck.  Lord I hope this air suspension system works because I love my truck! I cleaned the camper and could not believe how muddy the water was after just wiping everything down.  Got the floors vacuumed and mopped and cleaned the A/C filter.  It's nice being in a clean camper again. Nikki loves this spot - great ball throwing room! We took Nikki to town (Durango) in hopes of finding a place to eat outside with her.  No luck.  So many people wanted to pet ...

Day 13 - Back in the Saddle Again

I'm sore today, but ready to ride again. The morning started out with me waking Kevin up to ask if he had his alarm set.  "Yes", is the answer.  I tell him it's 6 am.   He jumps up out of bed, runs to his phone (alarm), and grumpily tells me it's 2 am.  Ooops, I did the 2 hours difference wrong.   Neither of us went back to sleep. Kevin leaves at 5:30 am, to take the truck back to Durango to their Ford Dealership to have them look at the brakes, I'm taking Nikki on a 3 hour "hike" to the creek and to photo birds.  Then I did our laundry and made ready for a motorcycle ride when Kevin returns. Today we did 40 miles of gravel and adventure roads.  NO mud puddles!!  I've got my game on again and ready for anything. Well, anything except for a hairpin curve that is only dirt and rocks with a bad bank to an approximately 200 yard fall.  Yep, we turn around. We did the Alpine Loop and found some neat old mine remains, we beat the ...

Day 17 - White Rim Trail

Day 17 – White Rim Trail After breakfast, we took what we had intended to only be a couple of hour ride.  The ride lengthened out to 6 hours, 144 miles with about 60 miles being dirt, sand, and gravel.  We rode up Moki Dugway, the mountain that has 3.3 miles of 10% grade, 5 mph hairpin turns, and only one lane most of the way.  I had been looking on our Adventure Atlas for more roads to ride.  Found one called White Rim Trail which was at the top of Moki Dugway.  It was approximately 5 miles of nothing but dirt and sand that led us to a beautiful, huge canyon.  A lot of the white boulders on top had large, round divots in them to hold water, and we found a crevice that had a large amount of water in it and tadpoles!  Kevin got a little spooked at that point thinking that it was a great waterhole for animals (like Mountain Lions), thus the spookiness.  We soaked up Mother Nature’s beauty there for a while, photographed lizards, and we left ...
