Well there is 2 mountain passes between Durango and Silverton in 50 miles. The air ride system seems to work pretty well, maybe too well. We cruised through the mountains maintaining and even exceeding the speed limit at times. On our final decent into Silverton off of Molas Gap as we approach Silverton I could smell the ever familiar stench of burning brakes. The stench was from our truck. After stopping at our new campsite I looked at the front wheels and watched the glue on tire weights falling off from the heat. YIKES! Not good. Set up the trailer and went for a ride. The truck needed to cool off. Rode up a valley following a beautiful stream until the road got really rough. Turned back and got the truck and Nikki and headed back up the valley (sorry truck LOL). Made it all the to the road ended at an abandoned mine and a series of tiered lakes made by beavers, They are amazing engineers! Saw some small wild life, a yellowed belly marmot and PIKAS!! Pikas live in little colonies among the rocks. Great Day!
Thursday June 4 CRAP! Best way of describing our first day, a long day. We did a shake down ride a week or so prior to this trip and knew things weren't perfect with the truck/trailer combo. We had problems with the handling of the trailer at speeds over 60 mph but thought it was manageable at a lower speed. Well on our shake down ride we had loaded the motorcycles and the generator, but once fully loaded things got worse. Stopped at a Lowes and bought 6 bags of gravel to help distribute the weight better, it was an improvement, but not great. After 8 hours we bought 4 more bags and that was a major improvement. Stayed at Bootheel camp ground in Missouri, the reviews said peaceful and quite. Not sure where that reviewer lives but we are a couple hundred yards from an interstate hwy, maybe the constant sounds of semis through the night was their idea of peaceful white noise. Diamond bound in the morning! Stephanie plans on finding one bigger than the Hope Diamond.
