Day 16 - Cleaning Day & Scary Starry Night

Not much to say about today.  Kevin took the truck back to Cortez to have the bed cover installed (per our negotiations – we told them we wanted a bed cover – we got it).  His other mission was to go to their Wal-Mart to get groceries, etc.  Believe it or not, the Wally World in Cortez, CO is the closest one – 2 hours away.  The next closest one is in Flagstaff, AZ – 3 hours away.  I learned this from the young lady that was running the KOA office.

While Kevin was gone, Nikki and I did our laundry and cleaned “house”.  That’s about it for now.  Kevin is talking about taking another nap, so I’m not sure if we will do anything more today or not.

Drove to Kayenta to get cell service.  Not much else going on, yet.

It's sunset and we are on our way to Valley of the Gods with camera equipment in tow to shoot stars.  We found 2 spots to photograph from.  The 2nd spot ended with us scurrying to get back into the truck, lock the doors, and get the heck out of dodge!  I noticed a light some distance up the road, flashlight.  It would stay on for about 10 seconds, then go off.  I pointed this out to Kevin, who did not see the light.  Several minutes later I see the flashlight again, only this time much closer and in the scrub brush.  I got Kevin's attention.  This time he saw it and saw the light go out.  He said "Let's get out of here!"  The person was on my side of the truck and all I could envision was him/her rushing me before I could get int the truck and lock and the and hacking me to pieces with an ax (yes, vivid imagination).  I think that was the fastest time we made putting all equipment in the truck and getting in ourselves.  It was very spooky.  Why would a person walk down the road in the dark, then go into the desert scrub, to sneak up on 2 unsuspecting people?  I'm not ashamed to admit I was very afraid!

I discovered some more dirt roads on the map that are on top of a mountain.  We are going to ride them, hope they are good roads!

Here is the only decent star shot I got with some of the rock formations silhouetted.

Day 9 - Moving Day

We moved to the new site and it is so much nicer than the previous site we had.  We now have electricity hookup and lots of room to move around.  Nikki seems to like it also since there is no tall grass here - just trees and pine needles. Kevin spent his day working on the rear end of the truck, with my assistance when needed.  He got the air suspension system on, in a few days we will see how it works.  If it doesn't work, we may be going to a dealership to look for a heavier duty truck.  Lord I hope this air suspension system works because I love my truck! I cleaned the camper and could not believe how muddy the water was after just wiping everything down.  Got the floors vacuumed and mopped and cleaned the A/C filter.  It's nice being in a clean camper again. Nikki loves this spot - great ball throwing room! We took Nikki to town (Durango) in hopes of finding a place to eat outside with her.  No luck.  So many people wanted to pet ...

Day 13: Truck Repairs and Desires - Kevin

I made a 7am appointment at the Ford Dealer in Durango to have the brakes I smoked checked out. While they were fixing the rotors and replacing the pads I went looking around the lot. Found a beautiful 2020 F350 almost Identical to Steph's truck. A little longer bed and no sunroof but it had a diesel engine.... on sale for only $66K! Walk away... walk away quickly! No I'm an idiot I went back and looked at it again but resisted. One more major repair or major scare and we will reconsider this option. Came back with fresh brakes and went motorcycle riding up on the Alpine loop. It's amazing how many abandoned mines that are here in the Rockies. We stopped and played around one of the mines near Eureka. Came down the mountain and went exploring a few other small roads north of Silverton. Another fine day.

Day 19: Bulls, SMB or FMB - Kevin

Cooking in confined spaces can be tricky.  The sauteed onions and peppers and garlic potatoes smell wonderful while cooking.  They also linger throughout the night. Lesson learned! LOL! I got up to run to a town called Loa to get some supplies, so of course I took the scenic route over the mountain will Stephanie stay behind. Once over the pass I found open range. We seen open range signs throughout the West but seldom seen more than a cow or horse in the distance. I found a herd of cattle and I'm staring at a bull in the road. Pat McManus says there are only two kinds of bulls,  FMB (fast mean bull) or SMB (slow mean bull). Not sure if he was a FMB or a SMB but after he walked behind a cow on the right I twisted the throttle and went left,  not a chance against a Suzuki! In town found a garage with a bunch of old Chevys,  the West is full of old cars laying around.  Headed back and took Stephanie for the ride over the mountain to find the herd had gotten l...
