Day 14 - Truck Experiment #4

We left Silverton this morning with high hopes that the new brakes, air bags, etc. would provide us a safe trip to Monument Valley.  Not.  The brakes were smoking before we'd made it half way down the mountain.  Sigh.  Once we made it to "flat" road, the winds picked up and we were again pushed and pulled along the road.  We discussed heading back home because this was just no fun, and we didn't want to die. We also discussed the fact that we enjoyed this type of traveling, and when Kevin retired we would like to spend our time traveling in this fashion and to do that we would need to get a heavy duty truck.  Therefore, while in Durango we went to 2 dealerships - Ford and Chevy.  Nothing at either place enticed us to make that plunge.  So on to Cortez we went.

We saw the wildfire that had dropped ashes on us the previous days, and while going down a steep grade, the truck and trailer, on their own, veered to the right almost sending us down into a ravine.  That really scared us.  Straight to the Ford Dealership in Cortez we went.

We found a beautiful new 2019 F350 diesel that jumped out to both of us.  Plus the incentives made it a no-brainer (along with the $$ they gave us for my little red truck, which I will miss).  After spending the afternoon haggling, we finally drove out of Cortez in our new big diesel.  No more swaying and veering off the road or into oncoming traffic.  Yay!  It's turned out to be quite an expensive vacation, but that's better than being dead.  Kevin relished in the abilities of the new truck and had fun testing it out.  And now I feel comfortable enough to drive which will give him a much needed break.  Win-win.

We made it to Monument Valley just before sunset.  The north rim of the Grand Canyon is on fire, which made for a spectacular sunset (but camp needed to be set up - no time for photos).  I did take some pics from the truck as we sped along.  I got Mexican Hat, Cow Canyon Trading Post (which has not changed at all since we saw it several years ago), and a new bird - Cassin's Kingbird.

Tomorrow, if my sinuses allow, we will take the bikes out for Utah adventures (the dust in Durango and Silverton have taken their toll on my sinuses).   If not on the motorcycles, then in the truck we will go.

Day 1: Learning curve & Swerve - Kevin

Thursday June 4 CRAP! Best way of describing our first day, a long day. We did a shake down ride a week or so prior to this trip and knew things weren't perfect with the truck/trailer combo. We had problems with the handling of the trailer at speeds over 60 mph but thought it was manageable at a lower speed. Well on our shake down ride we had loaded the motorcycles and the generator, but once fully loaded things got worse. Stopped at a Lowes and bought 6 bags of gravel to help distribute the weight better, it was an improvement, but not great. After 8 hours we bought 4 more bags and that was a major improvement. Stayed at Bootheel camp ground in Missouri, the reviews said peaceful and quite. Not sure where that reviewer lives but we are a couple hundred yards from an interstate hwy, maybe the constant sounds of semis through the night was their idea of peaceful white noise. Diamond bound in the morning! Stephanie plans on finding one bigger than the Hope Diamond.

Day ???? - Nikki

I have no idea what the idiots are up to today!  Woof!  I'm tired of being put into the back seat and only being able to see 1/4" above the window, haven't these morons heard of booster seats?  I don't know how much longer of this riding around for hours, being brought out into the sun and fresh air only for a few minutes at a time, and them demanding that I "Go Potty".  I'm about ready to call PETA!  Wait, my paws are too fat to dial, can someone call PETA for me please?  In the meantime, I'll continue to thrill them when I pee and poop.  Someone, please help!!

Day 15 - Miles of Adventures

Today started out with an outing on back dirt roads to see the Mexican Hat up close and personal.   We were hoping to be able to ride down to the San Juan River, but the descent was very steep with loose sand.   We did get to the back side of the Mexican Hat though. After that on to the Valley of the Gods!   WONDERFUL RIDE!!!   The road through the valley was as perfect as we could ask for for a dirt/sand road.   There was one time when my back wheel got a little squirrely on me in deep sand.   I was to blame because I was riding in Ray Charles mode (swinging head left and right to catch all the sights) and didn’t pay attention to my immediate surroundings.    It was very deep sand!   But I made it and Kevin following made it through with no problems.   Valley of the Gods is beyond words to describe!   I’m so disappointed that my “go pro” camera was not rolling as we drove through the valley.   I thought I’d turned it...
